Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Yonkers Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco-compatible damper repair parts throughout Yonkers, with most repairs running $195 – $385 installed depending on the model and what failed. If your Gelco damper is stuck open, won’t seal, or the cable snapped, we can usually get it working same week with a written price before any work starts. Most Yonkers homeowners discover the problem in December when cold air pours down the flue, or in July when they notice the damper plate has rusted through from spring rain getting past a worn chimney cap.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco dampers come in a few distinct lines, and the repair path differs between them. The most common in Yonkers homes are the Gelco Top-Seal models, which mount on top of the flue tile and use a cable-and-pulley mechanism running down the inside of the flue. You’ll also see Gelco throat dampers, which sit just above the firebox and replace the old cast-iron plate style. The identification label is usually stamped into the metal frame or attached to the cable housing near the firebox. If the label is gone, measure the flue tile’s inside dimensions: Gelco top-seal dampers are sized to fit standard square and rectangular flue tiles in half-inch increments, and the mounting flange is a dead giveaway.
On parts, we’re honest about the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision. Gelco’s factory replacement parts are well built, but for cable assemblies and mounting hardware, the quality aftermarket options we keep on the truck (from brands like DuraFlex, which we also stock parts for, and Copperfield) often match or exceed the original spec at a better price. The critical component is the damper plate itself, and that’s where we recommend Gelco OEM when available, because the cast aluminum thickness and seal gasket are hard to replicate. Hadley Chimney Yonkers is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so we can recommend whichever part actually serves you best.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The damper won’t stay open or closed. The cable has stretched, kinked, or detached from the pulley. This is the most common failure, especially on top-seal models where the cable sees constant exposure to creosote (the flammable tar buildup inside the flue) and moisture through a Yonkers winter.
- Cold air pours down the chimney when the fireplace isn’t in use. The damper plate isn’t making a full seal. Either the gasket is compressed and cracked from years of heat cycling, or the plate has warped slightly from uneven heating. You’ll feel it as a draft near the firebox even with the damper closed.
- You smell smoke or gas exhaust backing into the room. The damper isn’t opening fully, so combustion gases can’t vent properly. This is a carbon monoxide concern and worth a call the day you notice it.
- The cable pulls but the plate doesn’t move. The connection at the plate has failed. Often the clevis pin has corroded and snapped. Up close, you’ll see rust staining on the plate hinge.
- Rust flakes or water staining visible on the damper frame. Water is getting past the chimney cap. In Yonkers, freeze-thaw cycles accelerate this. The damper is often the first thing to show it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Yonkers home, a Gelco damper repair typically runs $195 – $385 installed. The lower end covers a cable assembly replacement or hinge re-pin. The upper end covers a full damper plate replacement on a top-seal model, including removing the old plate, fitting the new gasket, and adjusting the cable tension. If the flue tile itself needs prep work because of spalling, that can add $75 – $150, which we’ll show you in a photo before we do it. What makes the price move is mostly geometry: a two-story house with a steep roof pitch means more ladder time, and Yonkers’ older housing stock near Park Hill and Greystone tends toward irregular flue sizing that needs more fitting work.
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Price in Yonkers |
|---|---|
| Cable assembly replacement | $195 – $260 |
| Hinge re-pin or pulley repair | $160 – $230 |
| Full damper plate replacement (top-seal) | $285 – $385 |
| Flue tile prep or spall repair (added) | $75 – $150 |

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look up the throat with a flashlight to see if the cable is visibly detached, feel for a draft with the damper closed, and confirm the pull handle or knob isn’t simply loose. That’s where DIY should stop on a Gelco damper repair. Anything that requires you to climb onto the roof to access a top-seal damper is a job for a trained professional: Yonkers roofs get icy and unforgiving, and working over an open flue while manipulating a spring-loaded cable assembly is high-tension work, literally. The wrong adjustment can cause the plate to slam shut on your hand or leave the damper half-open feeding a chimney fire. Call (914) 233-3156 and we’ll get eyes on it.
FAQs
A Gelco damper typically lasts 8 – 15 years in Yonkers. Coastal moisture, winter freeze-thaw cycles, and creosote exposure on the cable assembly are the three things that shorten that span. We see some top-seal units fail in as little as five years if the chimney cap was never replaced and water ran down the cable track.
Most Gelco damper failures can be repaired rather than replaced. The plate itself is usually fine; what fails is the cable, the hinge pin, or the gasket. A full damper replacement is only needed when the plate has rusted through or warped beyond a serviceable seal, which happens more often on top-seal models exposed directly to weather. Call (914) 233-3156 and we’ll tell you honestly which one applies.
A typical Gelco damper repair takes about 60 – 90 minutes on site. Cable replacements run faster; full plate replacements on a top-seal damper run longer because of roof access and fitting. We arrive in a tracked window with the specific parts likely needed, so most repairs happen in one visit.
We keep Gelco-compatible cable assemblies, hinge pins, and gaskets on the truck, because those cover most failures. Full damper plates are ordered and usually arrive within a few days. If you’re not sure which part you have, text us a photo from inside the firebox and we’ll identify it before we head out. Call (914) 233-3156 for a free estimate.
