Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Damper Repair: The Yonkers Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Famco-compatible damper repair parts across Yonkers, with most repairs running $185 – $410 installed depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the full frame. Most Yonkers homeowners discover the problem the same way: a draft that won’t quit, a damper handle that spins freely without catching, or smoke backing into the living room on a windy evening. If your Famco damper isn’t sealing or won’t stay open, we can usually get it sorted in a single visit.
Here’s the fastest way to know if it’s the damper: stand next to the fireplace on a cold morning and feel for air moving down the flue. A working Famco damper seals tight. A failed one lets heated air escape all winter and lets rain, birds, and humidity in during the summer. We see it most often in the older housing stock around Park Hill and Ludlow, where original Famco units from the 1980s and 90s are hitting the end of their service life.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco made a handful of damper configurations over the years, and the parts are not interchangeable between them the way some universal aftermarket kits claim. The three we see most in Yonkers homes are:
- Top-sealing (lyre-style) dampers with a cable that runs down the flue to a handle or knob mounted on the firebox wall. The cable housing at the top is the most common failure point.
- Cast-iron throat dampers with a ratcheting handle and a frame mortared into the firebox throat. These are original equipment in a lot of 1950s and 60s Yonkers colonials.
- Barometric and draft-control dampers on oil-fired or older gas-fired equipment, where a weighted flap swings on a spindle. Different beast entirely, and the sizing matters.
The compatibility gotcha: Famco stamped the part number on the frame, not the plate, on many throat models. If the plate is warped but the frame is sound, you can sometimes replace just the plate. If the frame is cracked or the weld at the hinge has let go, you’re looking at a full frame swap. We carry Famco-compatible plates, cables, handles, and complete assemblies on the truck, along with quality aftermarket equivalents for models Famco no longer produces. For discontinued Famco series, we use the aftermarket equivalent rather than trying to force-fit an OEM part from a different generation. Leaning a tape measure on the outside lip of the damper frame and snapping a phone photo gets us 90% of the way to identifying the right part before we even arrive.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins freely or won’t stay in position. The pawl and ratchet mechanism on Famco throat dampers is usually the first part to go. After thousands of open-close cycles, the teeth wear smooth and the damper won’t hold open or closed. We replace the handle assembly rather than trying to file teeth back into a worn pawl.
- Cold air pours down the chimney in winter. If you can feel a breeze at the firebox when everything is closed, the damper plate isn’t seating fully. On top-sealing Famco units, that’s almost always a stretched or frayed cable that no longer pulls the plate tight.
- Smoke rolls into the room on windy days. A damper that won’t stay fully open, or one that rattles partially closed in a gust, forces smoke back down the flue. The counterweight or spring on some Famco models loses tension over time and leaves the damper half-open by default.
- Rust-colored flakes falling into the firebox. The cast plates on older Famco models corrode from years of condensation and flue gases, especially in Yonkers where summer humidity gets trapped in seldom-used chimneys. Once the plate starts flaking, it’s not long before the hinge weld fails. We catch these early during routine sweeps before they strand a homeowner mid-season.
- You hear scratching or nesting sounds from the flue. A damper that’s stuck open or missing entirely is an open invitation. We’ve pulled everything from sparrows to squirrels out of the flue area above a failed Famco damper in Yonkers homes. The damper is the only barrier between the outside and your firebox, and when it’s compromised, it’s not just the heating bill that suffers.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the range we quote across Yonkers, written plainly because that’s how we work:
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Damper plate replacement (frame intact) | $185 – $275 |
| Cable and handle replacement (top-sealing units) | $195 – $310 |
| Full damper assembly replacement | $295 – $410 |
| Chimney cap or top-mount damper replacement | $340 – $560 |
The spread comes down to access, not parts. A throat damper in a standard firebox is straightforward. A top-sealing damper in a tall chimney off a second-story roof near Getty Square takes more time and more ladder work. Every quote includes labor, parts, cleanup, and the written guarantee. There’s no charge to come out and assess the damper, and the price we give you before we start is the price you pay. That’s been the rule since the company was founded in 2003, and Cory Mitchell holds to it on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things an owner can safely check, and things that go sideways fast. Checking the handle for free play, looking up the flue with a flashlight, and snapping a photo of the damper plate from below: all fair game, and all helpful to send us before we arrive. Where DIY goes wrong is anything involving standing on a roof to access a top-sealing Famco unit, or chiseling out a mortared throat damper frame. The frame sits above your head in the firebox throat, held in by a few inches of masonry that’s been heat-cycling for decades. One misplaced hammer swing and you’re looking at cracked firebrick and a fix that costs triple what the damper swap would have. We also need to take the old cable and handle assembly seriously, as it’s under tension in some Famco configurations. This is one part where we tell people plainly: this is roof-and-flue work, and the smart repair is the one done by someone who has done it in a hundred other Yonkers chimneys already. FAQs
The cast-iron throat dampers on original Famco units in Yonkers homes typically last 25 to 40 years, but the cable and handle components on top-sealing models wear out much sooner, usually in the 10- to 15-year range. The Yonkers winter cycles, freezing and thawing against the metal, accelerate that wear if the chimney cap has also failed.
Yes, in most cases. If the frame is intact and the plate has simply worn out or warped, we can replace just the plate and keep the original frame. The repair-versus-replace decision comes down to the condition of the frame welds and the ratchet mechanism: we’ll show you photos of what we found and walk you through the choice before any work starts.
Most Famco damper replacements in Yonkers take between one and two hours from setup to cleanup. Top-sealing units that require roof access add time for ladder safety and cap removal, so plan for a half-day window if yours is on a second-story or steep-pitched roof.
We stock Famco-compatible damper plates, cables, handles, and complete assemblies on our service vehicles, along with quality aftermarket equivalents for discontinued Famco series.
