Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Yonkers Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible crown repair systems in Yonkers, with most crown repairs running $1,150 to $2,300 installed depending on your chimney’s footprint, crown condition, and whether the flue tile needs attention at the same time. If you’re calling about this, you probably already know something’s wrong: you noticed water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, found chunks of mortar in the gutter, or a home inspector flagged the crown before you closed on the place. Cory Mitchell and our crew at Hadley Chimney Yonkers hear some version of this every week: the crown looks fine from the ground, but up close it’s shot, and the HeatShield material that was supposed to seal it is peeling, cracked, or gone entirely.
Here’s what most Yonkers homeowners don’t realize until they’re staring at it: the crown is not the metal cap on top. The crown is the concrete-like slab that seals the very top of the chimney structure, the part that keeps rain and snow from soaking into the brick and mortar below. HeatShield’s crown repair compound is designed to resurface that slab, but when the slab itself has shifted or cracked, the compound can only do so much. We’ll get into what that means for your repair options below.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield’s crown repair line includes their Cerfractory Flue Sealant and their CrownCoat crown sealer, both of which we work with regularly on Yonkers chimneys. The Cerfractory material is what HeatShield techs use to seal gaps between flue tiles, while CrownCoat is the brushable elastomeric compound that goes over the crown slab itself. If you bought a HeatShield product or a previous chimney company sold you a HeatShield repair, you’re most likely dealing with CrownCoat on the crown and Cerfractory inside the flue.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: CrownCoat is not a structural repair. It’s a waterproof membrane, and it’s only as good as the crown underneath it. On chimneys where the crown has a full crack running corner to corner, or where the crown has deteriorated so badly that chunks are missing, no recoating compound, HeatShield’s included, will fix it. The crown has to be rebuilt first, usually with a proper portland-based crown mix, and then the HeatShield material goes on top as the water barrier. We’ve seen owners spend $600 getting CrownCoat applied over a structurally failed crown, and it starts peeling within a season because the slab underneath is still moving. That’s not a defect in the product. It’s the wrong application.
If you’re trying to identify what you have, check your paperwork first. HeatShield installers provide a warranty registration that lists the materials used and the date. If you don’t have paperwork, we can usually tell within five minutes on the roof whether it’s a HeatShield-style elastomeric coating or something else, like a cementitious crown mix. And a note on OEM versus aftermarket: HeatShield is not a parts manufacturer in the traditional sense. It’s a system of ceramic-based repair materials. There isn’t really a “generic HeatShield” the way there are generic brake pads. Some companies will offer cheaper crown sealers and call them “HeatShield-compatible,” but CrownCoat and Cerfractory are specific formulations, and using an off-brand substitute means you’re losing the material warranty that comes with the real product.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
We’re an independent service provider, not a HeatShield dealer or affiliate, so what we tell you comes from working on these chimneys in Yonkers, not from a sales manual. Here’s what a failing HeatShield crown looks like in the real world, and what’s actually going on under each symptom:
- Peeling or bubbling in the coating. This is the most common one. Water has gotten between the HeatShield membrane and the crown slab. In Yonkers, freeze-thaw cycles do this fast. Water seeps under the edge, freezes, expands, and pops the coating loose. Once the membrane is breached, water is getting into the crown, period.
- White efflorescence on the brick below the crown line. If you’re seeing chalky white deposits on the upper courses of brick, minerals are being carried out of the masonry by water. That means the crown or the cap is no longer shedding water away from the chimney. Homeowners often think someone splashed paint on the brick. It’s not paint.
- Cracks running through the crown you can see from the yard. If you can see a crack from ground level with binoculars, it’s worse up close. Hairline cracks let water in. A crack you can spot from below is probably wide enough to drop a coin into, and that’s structural, not cosmetic.
- Water in the firebox after rain. Direct sign the crown or the cap has failed. You might hear dripping, or you’ll find a small puddle in the firebox the morning after a storm. By the time water reaches the firebox from the crown, it has already traveled through the brick and mortar, which means the damage is ongoing, not new.
- Mortar joints below the crown turning sandy or crumbling. When the crown fails, water saturates the top few feet of the chimney structure. Those joints start losing binder, and you can literally drag a fingernail through the mortar and have it crumble out. This is brick decay feeding on trapped moisture.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Yonkers, a full crown repair with HeatShield materials typically runs $1,150 to $2,300 installed. That range includes removing the old coating and loose crown material, rebuilding the crown slab where needed with a proper portland-based mix, applying the HeatShield CrownCoat membrane, and sealing any spalled or cracked areas in the top courses of brick. The price depends mostly on three things: the size of your chimney’s footprint (a big double-flue chimney takes more material and more ladder time), how much of the old crown is salvageable, and whether we need to do flue tile repair with Cerfractory in the same visit.
Here’s our parts and labor breakdown, because you deserve to know what you’re paying for before anyone touches the roof:
- HeatShield CrownCoat material: $150 to $350, depending on crown size and number of coats.
- Crown prep and rebuild labor: $400 to $900, which includes removing failed coating, patching or reforming the crown edge, and creating proper slope so water sheds away.
- Flue tile sealing with Cerfractory (if needed): $400 to $800 when done in the same trip. Fixing the crown while leaving a cracked flue tile below it is like patching the roof and ignoring the hole in the ceiling.
- Scaffold or roof access charges: $200 to $350 for two-story chimneys or steep roofs. Most Yonkers chimneys need either a good extension ladder setup or a roof walk, and we factor that in up front.
Every HeatShield crown repair we do comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee on the repair, and if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. You also get a written price before any work starts, and photos of the crown before, during, and after. That’s not an upsell. It’s how we’ve done it since 2003.

You can absolutely inspect the crown yourself from the ground or from a ladder if you’re comfortable with heights. Look for the symptoms we listed above. Take photos with your phone. That’s useful, and it helps you talk to any chimney company without getting snowed. What you should not do is climb onto a Yonkers roof in January with a bucket of crown sealer from a big-box store and try to recoat the crown yourself. First, roof and ladder work kills more homeowners every year than chimney fires do, and the geometry of most Yonkers chimneys, especially around Fleetwood and Beech Hill, means the crown is hard to reach safely without the right ladder setup and harness. Second, if the crown underneath is cracked or shifted, your new coating is a temporary bandage over a structural problem, and you’ll have spent a Saturday and a couple hundred dollars buying yourself maybe one more season.
If you want to know honestly whether it’s a $200 re-coat or a real rebuild, call (914) 233-3156. We’ll come out, inspect it, and show you photos of exactly what we found. If it doesn’t need work, we’ll say so. If I wouldn’t leave it on my own fireplace, I’m not leaving it on yours.
FAQs
A properly applied HeatShield CrownCoat over a sound crown slab typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Yonkers, and sometimes longer on chimneys that don’t get hit with direct afternoon sun. The biggest killers of crown coatings in our area are freeze-thaw cycles and chimneys that weren’t prepped right before the coating went on. If the crown slab wasn’t repaired and sloped correctly first, expect 2 to 3 years out of the coating, not a decade. Call (914) 233-3156 and we’ll tell you which category your chimney falls into.
A hairline crack in an otherwise solid crown can usually be routed out, filled, and then sealed with HeatShield CrownCoat, and that’s a straightforward repair. But a crack that runs corner to corner, or a crown that crumbles when we probe it, needs at least a partial rebuild before any coating goes on. The distinction is visible in photos, and we’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing before we recommend anything.
Most crown repairs in Yonkers are done in one visit, and the whole job usually takes 3 to 5 hours including setup, prep, application, and the required cure time before we pack up. If the crown needs a tear-off and rebuild, we sometimes split it across two days so the new slab has time to set before the HeatShield membrane goes over it. You’ll get a written timeline before we start.
We keep HeatShield CrownCoat and Cerfractory on our service vehicles, so there’s no second trip back to a supply house and no reschedule for materials. We also keep DuraFlex liner components and Gelco crown products on hand for repair jobs that need multiple parts of the chimney addressed at once. If we diagnose a crown issue on site, we can typically do the repair that day if the weather allows.
